Research interests

My research focuses on the development of electron microbeam techniques to facilitate advances in the understanding of geological systems and the characterisation of inorganic materials.

Of particular interest is the development of protocols which permit quantification on a nanometre scale overcoming the challenges of beam damage, transitional metal L-lines, contamination and low x-ray intensities. This area of research is related to the recent development of the field-emission electron microprobe (FEG-EPMA), which permits analysis on submicron scales, and presents a major opportunity to advance understanding in a number of fields including experimental petrology and the study of short-term processes represented by nanoscale chemical zoning.
